DIY Chalky Paint Project & Giveaway

I am just getting around to showing you a project Dad and I completed a few
weeks ago.
My father has always been very handy and he loved working on projects around
the house.  I swear the man can build or repair anything!   Unfortunately,  the last
few years his health has limited what he can do.  When I saw this sad vintage lamp
I knew this was a project we could do together.
Before

One of the broken feet and chips in the plaster
The lamp is filled with what looks like horse hair and is molded in plaster.  Three of
the claw feet had been broken off and Dad used the last remaining foot as a model
and rebuilt the others.  He also filled in the chips in the plaster and cut off the rod at
the top so I could use  it as a candle holder.
After cleaning the piece I mixed up a couple of batches of DIY Chalk Like Paint using
calcium carbonate.  The piece was painted gray and then a watered down white
paint applied.
The (now) candle holder has 12 of the cutest cherubs and each one is different.
Dad did a great job on the claw feet!   They look exactly like the original one.
Here is the finished candle holder…looks like I need to buy a candle.  I bet the
candle will cost more than the $5.00 I have in the piece!
It was fun to work on this with Dad and now I will be looking for more things
for us to transform together.
The giant  Paris Map Giveaway  ends on July 31.  I hope you will
stop by and enter to win.
Thanks for dropping by and have a great weekend.

  1. Looks beautiful! And so meaningful to have been able to work on it with your daddy. I'd love to know what he used to make the new feet.

  2. Very nice! Would you share details on the repair of the feet or do you have another similar post with directions?

  3. Sherry, you and your Dad did a great job . . . it is beautiful!!! Will you please share how he molded the new feet and what material he used to make them. Thank you so very, very much. Always enjoy your blog!!! Louise

  4. Wow Sherry you dad did a fabulous job…I bet he loved doing this project with you! The candle holder is simply beautiful, thank you so much for sharing.

  5. How marvelous it is to have a handy dad or hubby! My father was also one who could fix almost anything and was always willing to try. DH is the same way but his talents are self taught and wide ranging.

Love the wonderful old lamp you rescued and that you and your father restored so beautifully. You're right! He did wizard work in matching the intact foot on the lamp when he made the other three feet. Applause, applause!!

You have a new family heirloom!

    Hugs!

  6. I am so impressed with how good that looks! It looks like an old french style candlestick you found at an expensive antique store! Love it! I bet your dad enjoyed working on it with you too.

  7. Your lamp reminds me of the poor bunny sitting on my front porch. His paint is chipped and one foot and part of an ear are crumbling off.
Summer is not over so I should give the poor dear ome new life!

  8. Good Morning Sherry, My word your dad is a talented man. The work that he has done on your lamp/candle holder is marvellous.
I love the change you have made using paint, it goes to show, that if we look past what an item looks like, and we have the vision, we can turn an ugly duckling into a swan.
How is your dad responding to all the wonderful comments you have received…. I should imagine with a smile.
    Best Wishes to you,
    Daphne

  9. Oh wow, he did such an amazing job, it doesn't look like it was ever broken. I am so impressed. What a fun project to do together and such fabulous memories too. Thanks so much for linking to Inspire Me. Hugs, Marty

  10. This project is great on so many levels, Sherry! Thanks for sharing it with us. My dad is living with me now and keeps asking "what is this blog-thing you talk about?"…his failing memory has a hard time grasping that folks can share stuff on the internet (which he has a hard time imagining how that works too). Please share more daddy/daughter proejects.

  11. I love that you turned this lamp into a candlestick! Great idea and lovely paint job with a perfect patina! New follower ; )
