Mantel Disaster Rectified

Hello everyone.  I hope you are having a wonderful weekend. Yesterday was Hubby’s birthday and I talked him into playing hooky. We went to the movies, dinner and then home for cake and presents.  If you see the movie Tourist  notice the hotel they stay at in Venice. This is the hotel we were married in and I have several pictures of us on the spectacular staircase that is in the movie. It was a treat for us to see the interior shots of the hotel.  You can see pictures of our wedding in Venice here.

Hubby and I went to Richmond Christmas Tour Of Homes today and boy was it cold!  I was hoping to get some pictures to show you but there were so many people it was impossible.  I can show you what I have been working on though.

After my Mantel Disaster was cleaned up I took a deep breath and started over on the mantel.  Since all but two pieces of my mercury glass was shattered I had to come up with an alternative.  I added a couple of Old Britain Castle plates to the mantel along with the two surviving pieces of mercury glass and a newly purchased tree for the center.

Our tree is a mishmash of hundreds of ornaments! I have a collection of Radko ornaments hanging beside Dollar Tree ones. There are ornaments my grandchildren made and some I have collected over many years.
My sweet friend Lynn at  A Vintage Nest  recently gave me a pair of antlers to add to my collection.  I put the antlers with some fresh greenery in a mercury glass bowl.  Luckily the bowl and candle holder behind it were not on the mantle when everything crashed to the ground.
I’ll be posting more decorations at my Share The Decor  party. I look forward to seeing you there.

  1. Oh my goodness -I just read about your mantel the first time around -you were so calm and handled just like we would all think you would handle -that is just a darn shame though. But your mantle today is beautiful and your coffee table looks lovely -sure was nice to see and hear about your weddinbg -how romantic I can't even imagine but it is such a nice story

  2. Hi Sherry! I'm so sorry about your mantel disaster!! Poor thing. I would have probably cried.
But…your second attempt turned out so beautiful! And I thought those Command hooks were good! Man!! You should write to the company with your story!
Your tree is so lovely and look at all of the ornies you have. I love trees like this. Mine is packed with everything I have too! 🙂

  4. Sherry, your mantle looks truly beautiful – I love the tree in the centre. Your decorated tree is pretty spectacular too, :o) so many lovely memories. Though I know it's heartbreaking to have some of your beautiful things destroyed, the alternative has turned out jusr fine!

  5. It looks great Sherry. I love those plates on the mantle. I also like the way that you have the antlers in a bowl. And, if it is any consolation, my mantle was re-done three times before I got it right, but luckily didn't have anything broken like you did. Will see you on the 15th and can't wait.

  6. Your redo came out great Sherry, I love the look of the plates with the greens and your glittered snowflakes. Your tree is just like mine….filled with memories. Thanks so much for sharing.

  7. Love your Christmas tree, reminds me of our tree at home where my mother saved everything and always put it on the tree. I have a new Blog. I would appreciate if you would drop by and see it. Thanks, Richard. myoldhistorichouse.blogspot.com

  9. Sherry, your mantel is just pure perfection and what a nice recovery from your mantel disaster…your pieces always looked beautiful grouped together. What a lovely place for a wedding. Thanks for bringing us along!

  10. Sherry, I still feel so bad about all your mercury glass:( But the mantel looks like it never even happened. It is beautiful! Oh I love your tree!

  11. That is too bad about your first mantle, but it looks very pretty now too…that transferware is so gorgeous. I noticed those baskets next to your fireplace right away and I love, love, love them 🙂

  12. Hi Sherry! I still feel just awful when I think about your mantel disaster but you really redeemed it! I probably would have just stuck a candle up there and called it a day! 🙂 But, you made it look gorgeous and richly elegant and I love the pop of red in the plates. Perfect!
